Kitchen Renovation Budgets Need a Clear Line Between Allowance and Selection
Kitchen numbers blow up when an allowance gets treated like a final price. Cabinets, appliances, counters, tile, lighting, and plumbing fixtures each have a selection date. Mix those with demolition and rough carpentry and the spreadsheet looks finished while the showroom cart is still empty.

Name what is confirmed and what is still a dollar figure
Confirmed means a model number, a shop drawing, or a finish sample that has been signed. An allowance means we reserved money and calendar space, not that the object exists. Appliances without cut sheets cannot lock electrical or gas. Cabinets without field dimensions cannot be built. Counters cannot template until cabinets are set and appliances are on site or clearly dimensioned.
Write three columns: fixed construction, allowances, and owner-supplied items. A homeowner buying the range still needs the opening, the circuit, and the gas stub to match that range. If the range is unknown, the opening stays an assumption. Homes in Alpharetta and Johns Creek often mix a custom cabinet shop with big-box appliances. Those two calendars do not sync themselves.
Cabinets drive almost every other date

Paint color, floor thickness, and appliance depths change scribe and filler pieces. If the floor is not chosen, the cabinet height at the first step is a guess. If the fridge is a counter-depth model you have not bought, the panel kit is a guess. Keep those guesses in the allowance column.
Appliances, electrical, and the panel you already have
Induction ranges, double ovens, and microwave drawers change circuits. A pretty lighting plan does not replace a load check at the panel. Photograph the panel and send appliance cut sheets when you have them. If the electrical work is still an allowance, say that so the construction price is not pretending the service is already sized.
Plumbing fixtures follow the same rule. A pot filler, a filtered water tap, and a pot-and-pan sink each add rough-in. How change orders should look before they happen
When a selection exceeds the allowance, the difference should be visible as a line, not buried in "kitchen upgrades." When a field condition appears behind a wall, that is a different line. Do not mix a nicer quartz with a rot repair in one verbal number.

Temporary kitchens and lead times belong on the same sheet
A calendar built only from carpenter days will skip the six weeks the cabinet shop is closed for a custom stain. It will also skip the week the household needs a working microwave and a sink. Write temporary kitchen location, dumpster access, and delivery path for crate-sized appliances. A range that will not fit through the front door is a logistics item, not a punch-list surprise.

Counters, splash, and the week after cabinets set
Counter templates happen after cabinets are set and appliances are present or clearly dimensioned. If the sink is still an allowance, the fabricator is guessing the hole. If the backsplash tile is still a Pinterest board, the wall stays unfinished while the household tries to cook. Put those selection dates on the same calendar as box delivery.
Lighting packages follow the same honesty test. A pendant allowance is not a chosen fixture with a canopy size and a dimmer that matches the lamp. Order lighting with enough lead time that the electrician is not hanging a construction bulb for a month after the photographer wants to shoot. Keep lighting in the allowance column until the SKU exists.
What to send before we price the kitchen
A photo of the existing kitchen, the panel, and the path from the driveway to the room. Appliance list with model numbers or a clear "still shopping" note. Cabinet drawings if a designer already produced them. Floor and counter wishes marked as selected or allowance.
